What do I need to go camping?

Many are confussed about what kit they need for Cub/Scout camps. I hope that this web page helps, the kit mentioned can be bought from a wide range of camping shops/websites. Some are:

                          Outdoor Megastore (Derby Rd, Bootle)

                          Scout Shops

                          Go Outdoors

                          Rucksacks

                          Picture
You should use a rucksack type bag as your child may have to carry their own bag some distance. The bag should be big enough to hold their sleeping bag. A 65 litre capacity bag is ideal.

We would advice that you get a 2-3 season sleeping bag. Always buy a compression sack as this enables you to reduce the space your sleeping bag takes up in your rucksack.

We do alot of tent camping and this will make the difference between a bad and good nights sleep. They are around £5, make sure you buy some straps to keep it together.

                          Boots

                          Picture
Alot of the camp sites we go to are not lovely, green farmers fields, the paths tend to be muddy. Also a good pair of boots provides support  during activities.

                          Waterproofs

                          Picture
You should have a good waterproof jacket, this can be combined with a warm coat (see clothing).

Waterproof trousers would also be helpful.

                          Clothing

                          Picture
The best pants to wear are combats/activity trousers (the ones with big leg pockets).
Jogging pants are also useful. But please no jeans as these are very hard to dry at camp!
You should also have a few t-shirts, jumpers and a warm coat. You could get muddy so leave the expensive clothes at home! You will also need a warm hat, base ball cap and gloves.

                          Washing kit

                          Picture
Yes Scouts do wash! You should bring a towel, toothbrush/paste, soap, plus anything else you need. A good tip is to buy miniature versions of toothpaste, soap etc. Skip buys these from the Asda in Walton but I am sure these are available from many other places.

                          Extras

                          Picture
We discourage the bringing of electronic items, sweets etc. But you can bring a book or magazine and cuddly toy!
